About
Connotation and denotation and two ways of looking at the same word. A word’s denotation refers to its actual meaning and is what the dictionary defines it as. Whereas, a word’s connotation is what the word implies. It’s what the word makes you feel or think of, and it refers to any additional figurative meanings the word has.
In this project, I looked into the relationship between text and visuals, and explored the impact that connotation/denotation makes on the meaning and purpose of a graphic.
Research
In the first stage of this project, I had to choose an object that I’d be interested in exploring visually and contextually. I chose my bottle cap opener that I was already well acquainted with, and started my creative process by sketching and taking pictures of it in various positions.
Brainstorming
In this next stage, I started coming up with relevant connotative and denotative phrases that would tell the viewer a little bit more about the bottle cap opener. I thought about the object’s essence, promise, use/function, memories, and cultural connection.
Execution
In this final stage, I picked out the most visually communicative pictures of the bottle cap opener and it in action, and placed the chosen phrases on their respective images to. My goal was the place the words in a way that would appropriately accentuate the images’ meaning.
